Beyond the Grave New Orleans Cemetery Tour
Overview
Most cemetery tours ask who is buried here. Beyond the Grave asks a different question: Who gets remembered?
Walk through St. Louis Cemetery No. 3 and discover New Orleans history through the people and communities who created a place for their dead. Explore how wealth, family, immigration, race, religion and mutual-aid societies shaped not only people's lives, but what happened to them afterward.
Hear the story of an architect memorializing parents lost at sea, immigrant societies that promised members a proper burial, seven women who created a lasting mutual-aid organization, and a successful free man of color whose stonework helped preserve other people's names. Consider forgotten Storyville women, abandoned family tombs, epidemic loss and one enormous mausoleum surrounded by unforgettable cemetery lore.
This isn't simply a tour about how New Orleans buries its dead. It's about how a city decides who will be remembered.
